FRANTZ LAMOTHE
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Frantz Lamothe is a Haitian self-taught artist whose life story is as rich and vibrant as his paintings. Born in Port-au-Prince in 1961, he moved to New York as a child to escape the grip of dictatorship, where he was immediately immersed in the exhilarating world of street art and graffiti. It was there that he struck up a close friendship with legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, who would become a lifelong inspiration. Lamothe's paintings burst with life, using bold acrylics and pop art symbols to explore themes of love, identity, and personal history. In the 90s, he expanded his artistic vision to include the statement "wearable prints" on painted Levi's denim jackets, a wildly popular series that he has recently revisited. Lamothe's talent has taken him around the world, with over 50 galleries from Europe to Japan exhibiting his work. With his distinctive style and remarkable story, Frantz Lamothe is an artist whose work resonates far beyond the canvas.
